Writing a professional bio for your business is particularly important for entrepreneurs.  But, it can be really difficult since most business owners don’t like to talk about themselves.

Like most entrepreneurs, you may not like to talk about yourself too much and bore people about your accomplishments.  But, you need to have a bio for your website, speaking engagements, and networking events.

Writing your bio is different than writing an about page for your website.  Bios are generally very brief and highlight your expertise, relevant skills, and achievements.

A good bio should be professional, personable, and particularly sound like you.

Even though bios are generally short and concise, it is good to have a long version of your bio as well.

Here are 8 steps to writing your simple bio:

Know Your Ideal Client Avatar

The most important step to writing your bio is to know your ideal client avatar.  Your bio is to introduce you to your ideal clients and help them get to know you.

A professional bio is different than a personal bio.  So, you need to know your audience and who you are introducing yourself to.
Also, you need to know what message will resonate with them.


Know Your Purpose

The second step to writing your bio is to know the purpose of your bio and what you want your ideal clients to hear about you.

Also, it’s important to consider who will read your bio and how it sounds when others read your bio. For example, in a podcast or interview, someone will read your bio.  But, your audience will directly read your bio on your website or blog.

Nevertheless, you want your audience to hear your voice, and you want your message to sound authentic and clear.

Start With Your Name

Begin your bio with your name.   You want your audience to hear your name and to know the bio is about you.

Write in Third Person Perspective

Always, write your bio in 3rd person.  For example, Mike Rafati is an entrepreneur; instead of I am an entrepreneur.

Throw In Some Personality

Add some flavor to your bio.  You want your audience to hear your voice and get to know your personality.  Include a bit of humor or something interesting to generate curiosity about your personality.

Make It Compelling and Personal

It is important to stand out.  Make your bio more compelling by highlighting your mission and relevant information.

Shine the spotlight on your most relevant expertise, credentials, and education.   Highlight your notable writing, speaking, and major accomplishments.  It is important to build credibility with your audience.

Make your bio a little personal by showing your personality.  But, only share relevant information and avoid listing your hobbies or other personal information.

Close With a Bang

Close your bio with a brief but memorable statement.  Include your current projects or even add intriguing twists to raise curiosity about you

End With Your Contact Details

Make sure to include your contact information in your bio.  It is important to add your contact details, such as your email or Twitter handle at the end of your bio
