Most coaches and service professionals start their businesses without paying attention to what’s required to open a business. Here, I will share with you a few tips that you and every solo professional must consider before starting a business.
Tip #1: Why are you starting your business?
This is the biggest question you must answer before starting your business. Are you starting a business or are you doing it as a hobby? Most hobbies cost you money and only a few go on to become a business. Starting a business requires planning, money, time, and a lot of marketing effort. Your mindset and reasons for starting a coaching, consulting, or any other services business must be strong enough to push you over the humps and motivate you to move forward at difficult times. Your passion and purpose will always provide the fuel you require to move forward. Therefore, you must always make sure that your passion and purpose are in alignment with your business goals. Misalignment will only drain your energy and cause difficulties for you.
Tip #2: You must learn about marketing to succeed!
Most coaches and consultants start their business after getting their certification. When they are not successful in attracting clients, they go back to school or take additional classes and complete new certifications. However, they don’t focus on improving their marketing skills and knowledge. Knowing how to market your coaching and consulting business is an essential skill to have in order to become successful.
Additionally, you must know who your target market is and what they need. Having a clear understanding of their needs is crucial to your success. In addition, you must develop a niche and learn how to use marketing strategies and tactics to connect with your target market.
Tip #3: Being an expert in your field is very important
Many skills are important, but the most important skill to have is to be the best you can be in your craft. If you are a coach, then you must know how to coach effectively in order to be successful. Therefore, you must assess your existing skills and expertise and create plans to improve your skills in your respected field. It is important to become an expert, since your expertise will separate you from your competition.
Tip #4: Ask for help!
This is so simple, so why is it a secret? It is amazing to hear the many reasons why people prefer to do it all on their own. They think they want to save money when, in reality, they end up spending more money and missing out on great opportunities due to a lack of support and help. Most coaches and consultants spend $1,000s to become certified in their field; however, they are not willing to spend any money to learn about marketing, nor hire someone to help manage their business. Fear is one of biggest reason that holds people back from asking for help. Keep in mind that this fear is actually putting you out of business, so, overcome your fears and ask for help.
